The fastest dinos and friends

Top speed is the fastest an animal could go for a short dash. Nobody has clocked a dinosaur, so scientists work it out from legs, muscles and footprints.

How do we know how fast they were?

For some famous dinos, scientists built computer models of their legs and muscles, or measured fossil footprints. Those numbers come from a study.

For all the others we made an estimate: we take the animal's weight and body shape and use a rule that scientists found for animals alive today. Middle-sized animals are the fastest, giants are slower. Ostrich dinos get a bonus for their long legs, armoured dinos are slower. Flyers are worked out from their wingspan. So treat these numbers as a good guess, not a stopwatch.

Speeds you know

  • A person walking about 5 km/h (3 mph)
  • A kid running fast about 13 km/h (8 mph)
  • A kid on a bike about 22 km/h (14 mph)
  • A fast human sprinter about 35 km/h (22 mph)
  • A car driving in town about 50 km/h (31 mph)
  • A galloping horse about 65 km/h (40 mph)
  • A cheetah about 100 km/h (62 mph)
  • A car on the motorway about 130 km/h (81 mph)

Sizes and speeds of extinct animals are estimates from fossils. Scientists often disagree, and new fossils change the numbers. Tap a dino to see where its numbers come from.
